Updated: May 20

Welcome, Wonderful Parents!

If you're reading this, chances are you're on a journey to get the right support for your child—and we’re so glad you’re here. Understanding the what, how, and where-to-even-start of the NDIS can feel a little like learning a new language. But don’t worry—we’re going to walk through it together, step by step, without the jargon overload (and with a few friendly tips along the way!).

Let’s unpack the NDIS and how it can help your child grow, move, and shine.

What Is the NDIS Anyway?

ree

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia’s way of supporting people with a permanent and significant disability. It provides funding to help people access the services and supports they need—whether that’s physiotherapy, speech therapy, equipment, or assistance with daily living.

The great news? The NDIS gives families choice and control. You get to decide what supports best suit your child’s needs.

Think of it as a personalised toolkit to help your child thrive.

Is My Child Eligible?

To access the NDIS, your child must meet a few key criteria:

  • Age: Children under 9 years old may be supported through the Early Childhood Approach (more on that in a moment!)

  • Residency: Your child needs to be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.

  • Disability Requirements: Your child must have a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday life.

Not sure if your child qualifies? A quick conversation with an early childhood partner can help point you in the right direction.

What Is the Early Childhood Approach?

If your child is under 9, the NDIS uses something called the Early Childhood Approach. It’s designed to support children with developmental delay or disability—and importantly, their families too.

You'll connect with an early childhood partner—a trained professional who understands the ups and downs of early childhood development. They’ll help you:

  • Understand your child’s needs

  • Access short-term early supports

  • Decide whether applying for NDIS funding is the right next step

Think of your early childhood partner as your guide, translator, and cheer squad all rolled into one.

The NDIS Application Process (Made Simple)

Here’s what the application journey looks like in real life:

  1. Connect with an Early Childhood Partner

    • They’ll explain the process and help determine whether your child may benefit from an NDIS plan.

  2. Complete the Access Request Form

    • This form includes your child’s personal details and information about their disability.

  3. Gather Supporting Evidence

    • You’ll need reports from healthcare professionals (like your physio or paediatrician) that explain how your child’s disability affects their daily life.

  4. Submit Everything to the NDIA

    • That’s the National Disability Insurance Agency—the people who make the decision about whether your child is eligible.

Got Approved? Time to Make a Plan!

ree

Once the NDIA says “yes,” it’s time to create your child’s NDIS plan. This is where the magic starts.

Here’s how to prepare:

  • Review Current Supports: Think about what’s working and what could improve (e.g., extra physio, better equipment, school support).

  • Identify Your Child’s Goals: These can be anything from “build strength to ride a bike” to “join in at playgroup.”

  • Attend the Planning Meeting: You’ll meet with a planner or early childhood partner to build a plan tailored to your child’s goals.

Bring snacks, notes, and don’t be afraid to speak up—you're the expert on your child.

Managing Your NDIS Plan: What Are My Options?

Once your plan is approved, you’ll choose how to manage the funding. There are three options:

  1. Self-Managed: You handle the finances and pay providers directly (great if you like spreadsheets).

  2. Plan-Managed: A plan manager takes care of the admin so you can focus on your child.

  3. NDIA-Managed: The NDIA pays the providers directly, but you’ll need to use registered providers.

Can’t decide? Many families use a mix—and you can always change later!

Final Thoughts: You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Navigating the NDIS can be a big task—but you’re not in it solo. There are wonderful professionals, from early childhood partners to therapists, who are ready to help your family every step of the way.

Early support can make a lifelong impact. The sooner you access the right services, the more confident and capable your child—and you—can feel.
